Shiite Muslims in Istanbul commemorate Ashura with processions and ceremonies honouring the martyrdom of Imam Hussein. Celebrations include acts of mourning, processions and lamentations, where women weep and lament as if they were mourning their own child’s death. It was quite emotional to have dozens of women weeping right in front of me while I took photos.
