During a trip to Ethiopia, heading towards Danakil, I spent a few days in Tigray. As often happens, the journey is not just the destination, and often places and people encountered during the journey find a special place in the heart. Tigray is the northernmost region of the country, bordering Eritrea to the north. The population is predominantly Tigrinya, predominantly Coptic Orthodox Christian. Their vocation is agriculture. A so-called poor country, long tested by war and famine. Yet they are dignified men, women, and children, smiling and welcoming even to those bearing the shame of the Italian occupation. Gorges, mountains, fascinating monolithic churches, and a priceless cultural heritage. A wonderful country and people who have yet to suffer yet another forgotten civil war (2020-2022), which has been too little talked about in the rest of the world, and still in a state of humanitarian emergency.
