You can trace the political impact of queer visibility from the Stonewall Riots to ACT UP’s “Day of Desperation” and to the fight for Marriage Equality. It’s haunting to know queer history and its impact is often forgotten or underrecognized. Embedded in this history are the queer activists and artists whose legacies paved the way for future generations of family. With ongoing violence against queer people and looming societal uncertainty, each generation continues to fight for basic human rights. In the face of forced assimilation within the dominant heteronormative culture, I look to the past, I look to nature for a road map to resistance, serenity, and fortitude.
In making these photographs, I stand in the power of shared queer histories. By visualizing my subjective experience of queer intimacy and seeking, I reify the importance of connecting to this history through lived interactions with those who’ve survived and those who continue to.
