Candelora Montevergine 2024 - @ninencja
Every year on the February 2nd the Madonna of Montevergine (Italy) called also Mamma Schiavona (Mother of Slaves), is honored with a pilgrimage of "femminielli" to the sanctuary, where they, together with the other pilgrims, pray, sing and dance. Historically, in Italy, the term "feminielli" referred to men who had feminine attributes and straddled the line between the masculine and feminine. Today, they are a mixture of transgender women, nonbinary people and some gay men . They are deeply devoted to Madonna of Montevergine as their saint patron. As the legend says, Madonna of Montevergine saved a couple of gay boys in love who were condemned to death in 1256, making Montevergine into “the only LGBTIQ pilgrimage in the world” .
